BUDUDA

Hon. Dr. Lillian Aber, the Minister of State for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees in the Office of the Prime Minister has cautioned local politicians in Bududa District who are frustrating the relocation of landslide victims from the disaster prone area to Bunambutye resettlement site in Bulambuli District.

Dr. Aber made these remarks while addressing local leaders from Bududa District where she expressed dismay at how the activity was stalling due to politicization of the entire process. It should be noted that a total of 271 households received Shs 17million each with government providing Shs 10million while a Non-Governmental organization, Give Directly supported each household with Shs 7million.

Despite these interventions, most victims have yet to relocate to the safe government procured land in Bulambuli District. According to Dr. Aber, the first phase of the resettlement strategy involves 242 households out of the 1,650 people affected by landslides in Bududa and shall commence this week. The strategy also includes a 2-acre plot of land per household, construction of housing units and, establishment of infrastructure at the resettlement site for survivors and victims of landslides.

Local leaders have been accused of demobilizing survivors and victims from relocating citing cultural heritage, misuse of funds by beneficiaries, and selfish interest for fear of losing potential voters.

“I know that you speak what people want to hear.  What is key is the life of the people. When I was appointed, I remember the President telling me that another constituency you are adding is going to be Bugisu.”

Mr. Jimmy Ogwang, the Acting Head of Department, Disaster Preparedness and Management presenting a status report to the local leaders.

“I want to reecho my personal commitment that I will do everything required on time to keep our people safe. I will ensure that I implement the President’s directive. Don’t demobilize because the blood of people will be in your hands,” Dr. Aber added.

The Minister said that her office would respond to the challenges raised and would work with the local leaders who will embrace the program and spread a positive message to the communities.

“If Bududa frustrates the programme, we will shift to another District because we cannot force people to move,” she warned.

The Bududa Woman MP, Agnes Nandutu, welcomed the Minister’s advice and urged the beneficiaries of the relocation funds to move to safer areas, saying they no longer want to see people die.
