The United Bank of Africa (UBA) Managing Director, Mrs. Chioma Mang, has revealed the group’s commitment of $250 Million to support SME businesses in Uganda. Mang made the revelation during a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja last week.
“In the next three years, the bank, the group, has earmarked $250 Million to support SME businesses in Uganda. And we are hoping that as many as are qualified to access, I think, can come forward and do that. These are some of the things we call indirect support to the Government of any nation,” she said.
Mang who hailed the Premier for her passion for the country also delivered a message from the group chairman, Tony Elumelu, who would like to have a conversation on what can be done for Africa during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA, 2025) in New York.
“Let me assure you that as you may be aware, we are part of Uganda. We are United Bank for Africa. We are not portfolio investors. We are here. We say we are non-partisan as an organization, but we work with the government of every country that we are in to bring the dividend of our democracy to the people, the dividend of self-rule to the people. So we’ve supported the government of Uganda,” Mang added.
On her part, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja appealed to the bankers to reduce the prime lending rates so that more Ugandans borrow and participate in the value addition of local commodities to support the country in consolidating its middle-income status. She revealed the success of PDM in poverty alleviation and as a catalyst of socio-economic transformation.
“When you look at the number of people who are poor, the poorest of the poor, Uganda is doing better than all these African countries. Our people can survive in their villages irrespective of other conditions. Why? Because we have policies deliberately come up towards helping our people to be independent, to survive, and move forward on their own.”
The Premier promised to meet with Elumelu when she travels for the UNGA event.
