KAMPALA
Stabex International through the Office of the Prime Minister has contributed Ten Million Shillings towards the rescue operations in the Kiteezi disaster.
The donation was handed over to the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah by Gilbert Otim, the Marketing Manager for Stabex International.
The function took place at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala.
“We want to bring our condolences on behalf of Stabex to you because you are the representative of both the people and Government. We are with you and this is just the beginning of our support,” said Otim. He lauded the Prime Minister for taking the Government to the people.
“I want to thank the Prime Minister for bringing the government to the people and there is no time the business community has called her and she refused to respond to them. We are very grateful,” said Otim.
He has promised that more will come as they are monitoring the situation in Kiteezi because the disaster might not be cleared in just few weeks.
The Prime Minister condoled with the people who lost their dear ones and those affected promising to offer support and an everlasting solution to the problem of garbage.
“As Government we condole with those families that have lost their dear ones in this incidence and promise that the government is doing its level best to ensure that the missing persons are retrieved and accorded a befitting burial,” said Nabbanja. She thanked the President of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for the support accorded to the affected persons and families.
President Museveni contributed 5m shillings to each family that lost their dear ones and one million for those who were affected by the Kiteezi disaster.
The Premier also thanked well-wishers such as Stabex International and other agencies for the support they have extended during this difficult moment. She hailed the security agencies such as Uganda People’s Defense Forces, the Uganda Police and other government Ministries and Agencies for the timely intervention and support.
The Prime Minister has informed the Media that after the exercise, they are going to dig pits where the garbage will be dumped as they plan for a long time solution.
She has called upon other institutions to contribute towards the Kiteezi Incidence so that the work can be done in the shortest time possible.
So far 35 bodies have been retrieved from the Kiteezi Landfill disaster that occurred on Saturday the 10th of August 2024 and efforts and rescue efforts are still ongoing.
Nabbanja said that Government plans to relocate families affected by the Kiteezi disaster to another safer place in Dundu in Mukono District so that the area at Kiteezi can be managed well for garbage.
She said that government has sent experts to Ethiopia to benchmark how they are managing their garbage.
The meeting was graced by the Permanent Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister, Mr. Dunstan Balaba.
Cabinet that will sit on Monday will make a pronouncement on the proposals to guide the country on the next course of action.
