NAKASONGOLA
President Yoweri Museveni has mourned the passing of Margaret Kumuhangi, the former Woman Member of Parliament for Nakasongola District and described her as a person who championed the cause for equal rights and opportunities for women.
“It was with sadness that I received the news of the passing on of Hon. Margaret Komuhangi, a seasoned politician and former Woman MP for Nakasongola District. On behalf of Government, on behalf of the NRM Party and on my own behalf, I extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family, the Parliament of Uganda; and the people of Nakasongola. My prayers and thoughts are with the family, at this trying moment. May the Almighty God grant you the courage and fortitude, to go through this moment of loss and sorrow,” the statement read.
The President’s message was delivered by the Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister of Uganda at the sendoff of Komuhangi at Walusi village, Nabiswera Sub county, Nakasongola District.
Museveni said that the late Komuhangi was a strong advocate for gender equality in Uganda. She championed the cause for equal rights and opportunities, for women and the girl child.
“Komuhangi spoke out against traditional injustices and prejudices against women. She will be remembered as an icon of women empowerment and emancipation,” noted the president.
He said that the NRM has proved to all and sundry, that women are capable of making a significant contribution to national development and stability.
“Therefore, I salute Hon. Margaret Komuhangi for her contribution to the socio-economic transformation of Uganda.
She served her Country and the NRM Party, with distinction and commitment,” said Museveni.
He said that the NRM has been privileged to associate and work with a cadre of her calibre and vision adding that the party shall remain indebted to her for the invaluable service.
“Therefore, as we mourn the death of Hon. Margaret Komuhangi, let us also celebrate her wonderful legacy. She has departed from us after offering distinguished service to Uganda. All those who worked with her must be proud of her legacy and emulate her good works,” said Museveni.
The bereaved family appreciated the support from President Yoweri Museveni for the support given to them during this difficult moment.
Different mourners described Komuhangi as a person who stood by her words and loved the unity of all mankind.
Rose Namayanja Nsereko, the Deputy NRM Secretary General described Komuhangi as a person who loved her party and worked for the progress of all the people without considering their tribal or religious backgrounds.
“I worked with Komuhangi and testify that she was indeed a peace loving Ugandan who worked for the wellbeing of all people,” said Namayanja.
Rt. Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba, the Minister for General Duties thanked God for the gift of Komuhangi who was committed and aggressive on what she wanted.
“Komuhangi was very slow but again very aggressive on what she wanted, she was so soft but again very hard on what she wanted her people to achieve,” said Lumumba.
The Minister for Public Service and a native of the District described Komuhangi as a peace loving leader who worked for the progress of all the people.
Komuhangi served in the 7th, 9th and 10th Parliament representing Nakasongola District as the District Woman Member of Parliament.
She died at the age of 54 and is survived by a husband and children.
