KAMPALA

The Government of Uganda has resolved to immediately start the management of Garbage at Menvu to address the apparent challenges in Kampala metropolitan areas.

This was resolved during a meeting chaired by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala.

“We have agreed to manage garbage at Menvu in Nansana Municipality and the Ministries concerned must move very fast because it is an emergency,” said Kadaga.

She said that the land purchased in Dundu will be used for resettling the people affected by the Kiteezi disaster but garbage must be managed within.

The meeting that was attended by several Ministers, Mayors, Chief Administrative Officers, Town Clerks and Development Partners resolved to start managing garbage at Menvu immediately.

This follows the stopping of dumping garbage in Entebbe because it has become a menace to the entire country even affecting the operations of Entebbe International Airport.

The Mayor Entebbe Municipality Rulinda Fabric Brad said that they had offered a temporary solution to the problem for a few days but it has been turned into a garbage dumping site which compromises the image of the country.

“Due to the prevailing situation as Entebbe Municipality, we had offered a temporary solution but now we cannot take in anymore. The face of the country is being littered with garbage which is negatively affecting us,” said Rulinda.

Julius Mutebi Nsubuga, the Mayor of Kira Municipality said that as local leaders, they have been waiting for the Government to come up with a position on garbage management in the country.

Ssebuwufu John Mary, the Executive Secretary, Planning and Civil works at KCCA said that Kampala City Council is being underfunded by the central government yet it’s the face of the country.

After a lengthy discussion the First Deputy Prime Minister assured the people that the government is in control and the dumping and management will be at Menvu in the meantime as government finalizes with the Kiteezi area.

The Minister for Works and Transport Gen. Katumba Wamala and Minister for Local Government, Raphael Magyezi pledged to work expeditiously to manage the situation.

Government is currently developing a national garbage management plan that will be rolled out to the other cities and towns to avoid the reoccurrence of Kiteezi disaster.
