Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja on Monday commissioned three Health Centres and a laboratory worth shs.3.6bn in Kakumiro District.
They include Kikwaya Health Centre III, which has been upgraded from a Health Centre II, Kitaihuka Health Centre III, Mukoora Health Centre III, and a laboratory at Kitaihuka Secondary School.
The facilities were constructed by the Government through the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers (UgIFT) Programme.
The UgIFT programme was rolled out in 2017. It contributes to the Government’s Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfer Programme, which aims to strengthen the financing and reduce the disparities in financing for service delivery across Local Governments.
Nabbanja urged the mothers in the district to shun the traditional birth attendants and give birth at the newly constructed health facilities. She said the Government was implementing its policy of establishing a Health Centre III per sub-county to increase access to medical services.
The Premier added that the NRM Government had already invested heavily in the health and education sectors to raise a healthy and educated population.
“When the NRM Government came to power, life expectancy was 45 years but it is now 64 years because of the good policies of the NRM,” the Prime Minister said.
Fred Byamukama, the Minister of State for Transport, who is also the MP for Bugangaizi West in Kakumiro district, commended the Government for building the health facilities.
“The NRM government is here to secure your future. That is why we have such magnificent facilities for you. Make use of them,” he added.
Aisa Agaba, the Bugangaizi East MP, said the Government had extended health services closer to the people. “We need to guard these facilities jealously,” she added. “The Government has done its part,”
Annet Semitego, a female councillor, thanked the NRM Government for fulfilling its promise to the people by constructing the health facilities.
