PM assures Mulago National Referral Hospital of more support, commends them for their commitment to serve

Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah has assured the management and staff of Mulago National Referral Hospital of the government’s commitment to support them in serving the country.

“The government of Uganda is committed to supporting you (Medical diagnostics and other health fields). We, as government, highly appreciate all various forms of support from the Health system partners and sponsors and we shall ensure we facilitate you to deliver,” said Nabbanja.

Nabbanja was on Thursday addressing Mulago National Referral Hospital staff, management and patients during the wellness week as the country prepares to commemorate the 60^th year of independence.

The wellness week is being marked under the theme “Evidence based health care, diagnosis the light in darkness”.

Nabbanja said that the government of Uganda in particular Ministry of Health (MOH) attaches great importance to Medical diagnostics. There are 2 areas where it has made significant contributions to training and infrastructure.

She said that government has offered scholarships in the field of medical diagnostics.

“Several hospitals/health facilities have been constructed and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment e.g. Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kawempe, Kiruddu, Mulago specialized Women’s Hospital (Information on ADB & Islamic bank Loan). 16 Regional Referral Hospitals will soon be equipped with CT scanners,” said Nabbanja.

She said that the government is also committed to improving the welfare of staff by enhancing their salaries.

The premier said “medical diagnostics plays a pivotal role across the entire healthcare continuum from screening, diagnosis and prognosis and treatment monitoring. This helps to improve clinical practice and quality of care, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.”

Nabbanja said that not so long ago we had COVID-19 pandemic. Medical diagnostics took a center stage in diagnosis, treatment and monitoring this disease.

Nabbanja congratulated the Executive Director and staff for organizing the event when Uganda was celebrating its 60^th Independence.

“We should remember that Mulago Hospital was a gift given to Uganda by the Queen at Independence. This event is very important for our country. I request the executive Director and staff to hold more of such events,” added Nabbanja.

The Executive Director Dr. Rosemary Byanyima informed the Prime Minister that several activities have taken place like Ultrasound scans, blood tests, screening tests, promotion of health living talks & procedures, counselling, educational engagements with the public and exhibition of stalls.

Meanwhile the chairman of the hospital management board Prof. Edward Kanyesigye told the Prime Minister that Mulago National Referral Hospital is experiencing increasing numbers of Boda boda road accident victims in the casualty ward.

“It’s a big concern that many people are admitted in Mulago due to Boda boda accidents and the numbers are increasing. Government needs to come up with measures to address this challenge,” said Kanyesigye.
