The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has hailed Uganda for her commitment and sacrifices to ensure that peace and stability prevails in Somalia and the region.

The United Nations Secretary General expressed sympathies upon the loss of African Union troops while countering the Al-shabaab terrorist group in Somalia.

Ban Ki-moon made the remarks while meeting the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda who was at the UN headquarters in New York, United States of America to represent President Yoweri Museveni at the high level meeting on HIV and AIDS.

Member States at the United Nations General Assembly high level meeting on ending AIDS adopted a Political Declaration on ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030 within the framework of the Sustainable development goals(SDGs).

Ban Ki-moon while meeting Rugunda thanked President Museveni for also contributing to the peace process in Burundi and South Sudan.

He said regional leaders should ensure that the Government of national unity in South Sudan works together for the sake of peace and stability in the country and the region.

Rugunda on his part applauded the Secretary General for building very strong working relationship with Africa.

The Premier and UN Secretary General also discussed the political situation in Uganda including the recently concluded Presidential elections which were won by President Yoweri Museveni, the fate of FDC opposition leader Rtd. Col Dr Kizza Besigye and human rights violations in Central African Republic.

Rugunda said opposition leader Kizza Besigye was not being persecuted, adding that he was charged in the Courts of law for failure to recognize a legitimately elected Government by continuously defying lawful orders and swearing in himself as President of Uganda.

“All Ugandans are interested in peace and harmony,” Rugunda said adding that the new Cabinet structure which encompasses opposition leaders was an effort by NRM to have an all-inclusive Government.
