The Prime Minister of Uganda Robinah Nabbanja has urged all Ugandans to turn up in big numbers to update their National Identification cards which kicked off this week.

enrolment and renewal exercise for national identity cards, which started on May 27, 2025.

Nabbanja, who is also the Kakumiro Woman Member of Parliament, was speaking after updating her National ID in Kakumiro over the weekend.

Nabbanja joined the rest of Ugandans to update their IDs and explained the need for Ugandans to embrace this exercise even when their National IDs have not expired.  The exercise involves updating of the biometrics specifically the finger prints and the capturing of the iris which is a new feature.

“The National Identity Cards are very important documents especially when one has to move across the East African countries and even access some services within the country. So it is very imperative that all Ugandans who have attained the required age enroll and update their National Identity Cards,” said Nabbanja.

Last year, the government carried out the National Population and Housing Census which indicated that Ugandans are 45.9 million.

However, the Prime Minister said the National ID update exercise will be able to confirm the results of the just concluded exercise.

The exercise is expected to continue for six to ten months in all Districts of Uganda. This initiative aims to renew 15.8 million national ID cards, many of which are due to expire by June 2025.
