The Prime Minister of Uganda, Ruhakana Rugunda has called on all Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to play their individual roles to increase the tax base of the country so as to reduce the country’s dependence on donors, and therefore increase the country’s level of self-sustenance.

While delivering the Prime Minister’s speech at the opening of the Government Annual Tax Payers’ Appreciation Week (TPAW) in Kololo, the 1stDeputy Prime Minister, Gen. Moses Ali said that it is incumbent on all Government MDAs to ensure the country’s compliance with tax laws and payment of taxes in time if the country is to graduate to self-sustenance.

Gen. Moses Ali said that government is committed to ensuring that all Ugandans benefit from the increased revenue generated from taxes through effective and efficient utilization, as well as prioritizing sectors that directly benefit the ordinary citizen e.g. Agriculture, Infrastructure, Energy, Health and Education.

Moses Ali added that citizens’ perception of government accountability is very instrumental in shaping tax compliance among the citizens. He therefore urged all government MDAs to continue giving accountability to the citizens of Uganda who pay their taxes to receive good services from government.

Gen. Moses Ali, also thanked all government MDAs who turned up for the Taxpayers’ Appreciation event to showcase achievements attained from their activities, projects and programs they implement out of the tax revenue.

He said that its government has an obligation to account and at the same time, citizens have the right to demand for better services out of the taxes they pay.

The 2018 Tax Payers’ Appreciation Event was held between 26th—28th September at Kololo airstrip in Kampala, with 79 government MDAs showcasing their achievements alongside 250 private organizations.
