The Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda on behalf of the Government of Uganda has handed over 10 ambulances to the Uganda Red Cross Society which will be deployed on selected highways in the country to respond to emergencies.

The ambulances which were procured at a cost of UGX 8 billion by the Uganda Red Cross Society using funds received from the Ministry of Health, will be operating on highways which are considered to be hot spot areas prone to accidents and other emergencies that require evacuations.

While handing over the ambulances to the Uganda Red Cross Society at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala on Friday, the Prime Minister tasked the Uganda Red Cross Society to manage and take good care of the ambulances so the population can benefit from the services of the ambulances.

He said the deployment of ambulances is a big achievement for the country since they will help the people of Uganda to respond to emergencies especially those related to health.

“The Government is committed to serving Ugandans and will continue to work with organisations such as the Uganda Red Cross Society to enhance service delivery in the country. I urge the public to support the Uganda Red Cross Society and others who are willing to serve the people,” said the Prime Minister.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine commended the Uganda Red Cross Society for being a reliable partner of the ministry of health.

She said the ambulances will be fully functional and that, the Uganda Red Cross Society will be empowered to manage the ambulance services in response to emergencies.

She was also hopeful that each region will have a fleet of ambulances next year.

The Secretary-General of the Uganda Red Cross Society, Mr. Robert Kwesiga said the Uganda Red Cross Society was prepared to manage the well-equipped ambulances and highlighted the routes that were marked out by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Works and Transport, and the Police for the operation of the ambulances.

The ambulances will serve at the following highways; Kampala- Jinja highway, Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale highway, Kampala-Gulu highway, Mbale – Soroti highway, Kampala-Hoima highway, Kampala-Fort portal highway, and Kampala-Lira highway, while two ambulances will be stationed at the Uganda Red Cross Society headquarters to serve Kampala.

Mr. Kwesiga also thanked the Government for supporting the Uganda Red Cross Society and noted that his team is committed to professionally managing the ambulances.

The function was also attended by the Minister of General Duties, in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut, Government officers and the staff of the Uganda Red Cross Society.
