The Italian Regional Government of Sardinia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Madi Sub region of Uganda, to promote Water Resources Management, Environment and Forestry as well as Crop and Livestock development.

The MOU was signed in Adjuman District during a two-day summit that was organized by the Adjuman District Local Government in collaboration with other Development partners in the Madi sub region. The summit was held between the 18th-19th October 2018.

During the Summit, a delegation from Italy, headed by the Italian Minister for Regional Cooperation, Mr. Filippo Spanu, interacted with the locals of Madi sub region to discuss the best ways to develop the region through the established partnership.

Representing the Republic of Italy, Minister Filippo Spanu signed the agreement while the Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Moses Ali signed on behalf of the Madi Sub region and the Government of Uganda.

While making his presentation at the summit, The Adjuman District Chairperson, Mr. James Leku said that the region suffers massive environmental degradation, low agricultural productivity and that there is insufficient and inadequate water quality and quantity respectively.

He added that the region needs more effective and participatory approaches for water resources management, environment and forestry governance, as well as sustainable agricultural production.

The summit was also attended by the Italian Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Domenico Fornara, and the Ugandan Ambassador to Italy, Elizabeth Napeyok. The Government of Uganda was also represented by the Minister for agriculture, Hon. Vincent Ssempijja and the Minister for Water and Environment, Hon. Sam Cheptoris.

Mr. Filippo Spanu said that in the partnership, both parties will collaborate on joint projects involving regional and /or private organizations, entities and associations able and willing to contribute to the attainment of the set goals of the partnership. He added that the parties will also promote the establishment of good relations with local authorities while respecting their autonomy.

The summit ended with the signing of the MOU between the regional Government of Sardinia and the Madi Sub region.
