The Government of Uganda and the Province of Hunan in China have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote business, trade and investment between Uganda and Hunan Province.

The signing ceremony took place at Serena Hotel, Kampala, during the Hunan and Uganda Trade and Investment Cooperation matchmaking conference on Friday.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda who witnessed the signing ceremony appreciated Hunan Province of the People’s Republic of China for strengthening and building mutually beneficial ties with Uganda.

He said Uganda will do whatever it takes to boost its competitiveness to take advantage of the huge trade opportunities available in the Province of Hunan.

As Uganda, we need to add value to our raw products so that they are valuable and also export high quality commodities if we are to benefit from the trade opportunities and relations we have with China,” Rugunda said.

The Premier called upon Chinese to invest in Uganda especially in the priority sectors, adding that Uganda has access to massive markets for their products.

“Uganda is strategically placed to offer investors access to various markets including the East African Community, Common Market for East and Southern Africa and the recently signed African Continental Free Trade Area among others. China should take advantage of the available market and invest in prioritized areas of infrastructure, tourism, agro processing and Industrial Parks,” the Premier said.

He thanked China for its support to Uganda especially in building critical infrastructure such as roads and power plants, adding that Uganda looks forward to further enhancing cooperation for the benefit and prosperity of the people of the two countries.

The visiting Governor of Hunan Province, His Excellency, Xu Dazhe, who witnessed the signing on behalf of Hunan, said his Province is ready to strengthen the cooperation with Uganda in areas of Agriculture, Mining, Tourism, Industrial Parks and Power Generation.

The conference was also attended by the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Matia Kasaija, the Ambassador of China to Uganda, His Excellency, Zhen Zhuqiang, Ambassador of Uganda to China, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, Permanent Secretaries, Heads of Government Agencies and Delegates from Hunan Province.
